Mundungus Fletcher background
Mundungus Fletcher was born sometime before 1962.
And he was a Half-blood like his family. Which meant that at least 1 of his parents was a Muggle or Muggle-born.
Someone who couldn’t use magic…
Or someone who came from a family that didn’t know about magic at all.
Sadly, we don’t know much about Mundungus Fletcher’s life.
The book series never explored his story while growing up.
But at least we can confirm that he attended Hogwarts.
Mundungus Fletcher occupation
Mundungus Fletcher worked as a thief.
And he traded goods that were banned…
Not to mention, he wasn’t afraid of handling illegal deals too.
Just like how he stole from the Blacks’ property and sold them as his own.
Or fetching a deal on cauldrons that came from another thief.
But was he always a criminal?
Well, Albus Dumbledore changed him.
You see, Mundungus was caught in a difficult situation.
And Albus managed to save Mundungus Fletcher.
Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly what happened.
But it must’ve been really important…
Because Mundungus soon became 1 of the founding members of the Order of the Phoenix.
Of course, the other members of the elite wizarding group didn’t like him at all…
Especially because of his background.
But did that bother Mundungus Fletcher?
Not at all.
Because he was there for Dumbledore out of loyalty.
Mundungus Fletcher character
Mundungus Fletcher was pretty short.
And he stood 163 cm (5’4″) tall…
Plus, only 63 kg (139 lbs).
He had ginger hair.
And while he didn’t shave a lot…
You’d see him with some stubble in the films.
On top of that, he had really baggy eyes.
And wherever Mundungus went…
The stench of alcohol and burnt socks followed.
As for his personality, Mundungus led a dishonest life.
And he never tried to hide it from the Order.
In fact, Mundungus even sold off some of the Black family possessions…
Even if they weren’t his property.
So it’s a good thing Dobby and Kreacher caught him red-handed:
3 most famous Mundungus Fletcher quotes
#1: “More? That wouldn’t have been effing difficult… bleedin’ gave it away, di’n’ I? No choice.”
Dolores Umbridge bribed Mundungus for a locket.
And he hated having to give it away for free…
Even if he stole it in the first place.
But was it some ordinary accessory?
No, it was a Horcrux. A powerful magical artifact that made Voldemort immortal.
And that’s why Harry and his friends were so worried about it falling into the wrong hands.
#2: “I — well, I — It … it was a very good business opportunity, see …”
Mundungus tried explaining why he couldn’t watch over Harry Potter…
But his reasons were nothing but an opportunity to buy stolen goods at a bargain price.
#3: “Ah. Right. Sorry, Molly.”
Mundungus might not have manners…
But at least he’s got the heart to say sorry.
More facts about Mundungus Fletcher
#1: A family of criminals
I know it sounds way too convenient.
But it’s actually true.
Mundungus Fletched did come from a family of crooks.
For example, we have Phineas Fletcher.
A Half-blood that enjoyed buying and selling banned artifacts…
Trying to make a quick buck with illegally-made invisibility cloaks.
And if the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree…
It makes sense why Mundungus became a petty thief.
Plus, even research agrees too.
Because children are more prone to criminal behavior…
If their parents were involved in illegal stuff too.
Of course, that doesn’t excuse any of the bad things Mundungus Fletcher has done.
But it does help us understand his character a bit more…
And why he isn’t just some thief for no reason at all.
#2: Nobody knows his Hogwarts House
“But didn’t Mundungus attend Hogwarts? There must be some records out there, right?”
Well, as crazy as it sounds…
Mundungus Fletcher’s Hogwarts House still remains a mystery today.
In fact, even the Ministry doesn’t know either.
And all we have for evidence was a simple fan theory.
You see, we know that Mundungus Fletcher’s got some skills…
In very questionable areas.
But with his underhand tactics…
There’s a chance he may have stolen those records himself.
And made sure he had a clean file.
However, if that theory was true.
It sounds awfully like someone concerned about themselves…
Which is a very common Slytherin trait.
#3: Bitter relationship with the Hogwarts Caretaker
While most of Mundungus Fletcher’s records at Hogwarts are gone.
We actually have 1 detail about his time at the wizarding school.
And as funny as it sounds…
Argus Filch actually took his Screaming Yo-yo.
But before you say it’s not that important.
The yo-yo was a limited edition magical toy.
So if I were in Mundungus Fletcher’s shoes…
I’d be furious.
#4: Permanently banned from Hog’s Head Inn
Although Mundungus Fletcher seemed like he could get out of any kind of trouble…
Aberforth Dumbledore was a bit too much for him.
Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly what Mundungus did…
Or how bad it had to be to get banned from the Hog’s Head Inn.
But it must’ve been something really offensive…
Because that pub was the best place for shady people to work.
#5: Put Harry Potter’s life in danger
While it might sound dumb to put Mundungus Fletcher in charge of anything…
He was Harry’s undercover guardian.
And Mundungus was supposed to check in on Harry Potter 24/7…
Making sure that no harm came his way.
But did Mundungus Fletcher keep his promise?
Well, let’s just say some shady business deals were far more important to him.
Which was the worst time to go buy off stolen cauldrons…
Because Dementors suddenly ambushed Harry Potter and his cousin, Dudley Dursley.
On the bright side, Harry Potter managed to scare away the dark creatures.
But as for Mundungus Fletcher…
He received a stern lecture from Arabella Figg.
In fact, she was very disappointed and said:
“I’ll give you undercover! Dementors, you useless, skiving sneak thief… Yes, here, you worthless pile of bat droppings, here! Dementors attacking the boy on your watch!”
#6: Not the best buddies with the Weasleys
Mundungus Fletcher was a member of the Order.
So meeting the Weasleys was part of the job.
But did they become good friends?
Not in the slightest.
In fact, Molly Weasley was always annoyed by everything Mundungus Fletcher did.
For example, Mundungus like smoking.
And he used his pipe wherever he pleased.
However, Molly hated it so much and had to say:
“For the last time, Mundungus, will you please not smoke that thing in the kitchen, especially not when we’re about to eat!”
Plus, even research agrees with Molly.
Because smoking isn’t just bad for the user…
But also for the people around them.
On the bright side, the Weasleys eventually warmed up to Mundungus Fletcher…
When he saved Ron Weasley from a set of purple cloaks that kept trying to strangle him.
#7: Present during the D.A.’s first meeting
“Wait, isn’t Mundungus Fletcher supposed to be an adult? How could he possibly attend 1 of the meetings?”
Well, despite his shortcomings…
Mundungus was really good with disguises.
An extraordinary skill that was pretty hand in the world.
So when Dumbledore’s Army gathered in Hog’s Head Inn.
Nobody noticed Mundungus spying on the secret organization led by Harry Potter.
In fact, even Harry didn’t know about it…
Not until Sirius Black revealed to him that Mundungus was tailing Harry.
And that’s why I love Harry Potter so much.
Sure, there were plenty of flawed characters.
But everybody’s got a quirk or skill that made them stand out.
#8: A Harry Potter clone
Of course, I’m not saying Mundungus was secretly Harry Potter this whole time.
That’s way too crazy of a theory…
Even by Harry Potter standards.
But Mundungus Fletcher was part of the Battle of the 7 Potters plan.
An operation to get Harry out of sight…
And into a much safer place under the Order’s protection.
Mundungus Fletcher drank a Polyjuice Potion. A special brew that would make him look like Harry Potter.
He would act as a diversion.
Plus, Mundungus flew with Alastor Moody.
But did Mundungus Fletcher volunteer for the role?
Not in the slightest.
In fact, he preferred to do the flying part instead:
“I’m a soldier, I’d sooner be a protector.”
As a result, when the battle unfolded…
Mundungus Fletcher’s cowardice showed.
So when the evil Lord Voldemort shot a killing curse at him…
Mundungus teleported away, with Alastor Moody taking the fall instead.
And we lost 1 of the most powerful wizards in Harry Potter on that tragic night.
#9: Helped Aberforth keep an eye on Harry Potter
“I thought you said there was bad blood between them?”
Although that part might be true…
Aberforth wasn’t a role model by a long shot.
And since he didn’t shy away from shady deals…
Mundungus Fletcher was still his go-to guy.
So where does looking after Harry Potter tie in, you ask?
Well, Mundungus sold Aberforth a two-way mirror.
But this wasn’t your ordinary magical item…
It was previously owned by the Blacks.
And Aberforth used it from time to time…
Just so he could keep an eye on Harry Potter as well.
Of course, knowing Mundungus Fletcher’s personality…
We can’t say for certain if he did this in good faith.
But I’d like to believe this was 1 of his unseen contributions to the cause.
#10: All part of Snape’s plans
While it may have been Mundungus Fletcher who suggested the 7-Potter plan…
Did you know it was actually Snape’s idea all along?
You see, Severus Snape had to reveal when Harry was making an escape…
If he wanted to stay in Lord Voldemort’s inner circle.
However, Snape needed to protect Harry Potter too.
But he couldn’t be the 1 to suggest the idea…
Because the dark wizards would catch on.
As a result, that’s when Snape decided to use Mundungus instead.
So Severus Snape used a Confundus Charm while Mr. Fletcher wasn’t looking.
And with the help of the confusion spell…
He made Mundungus believe that had a genius idea to save Harry Potter.
Unfortunately, this does take away a lot of badass points from Mundungus Fletcher.
But in return, it does show just how smart Severus Snape can be.
#11: He might’ve fought in the Battle of Hogwarts
Of course, there’s no denying that Mundungus Fletcher went into hiding.
But there’s no concrete evidence that he wasn’t at the Battle of Hogwarts too.
And what proof do we have about his participation in the peak battle between good and bad, you ask?
The answer’s simple.
Mundungus Fletcher’s loyal to Albus Dumbledore.
Sure, Mundugus might be rough around the edges.
But he’d never turn down Albus.
So if Hogwarts was under attack…
It’s not impossible for him to sneak in and protect the wizarding school.
“Why wasn’t he seen in the battle or mentioned then?”
Let’s not forget that Mundungus Fletcher’s a master of disguise.
And if Harry didn’t notice him at Hog’s Head Inn…
How would Harry notice Fletcher amidst all the chaos?
Of course, that’s just a fan theory.
And for all we know…
He could’ve simply gone back to stealing and selling illegal items.
As a result, it’s not surprising why some people think Harry Potter is overrated.
There are a bunch of characters that could’ve gotten a great ending to their arc…
But never got the chance, and ended up feeling shallow.
